Tilting at Windmills is a collection of sculptural works which navigate the choppy waters of communication from multiple perspectives - it explores issues many people face arising from roaming technology, language difficulties, inadequate education or personality attributes.

Viewers of artist Denise Brown’s work consistently comment that it is exquisitely crafted.  It is a precision wrought by her background in industrial design and a quality highly regarded by respected practitioners in visual art, one of whom is Stuart Elliott - a mentor of Brown’s.

Summarising her work recently Elliott said:
“Denise has been able to consistently construct and present material propositions which use the admirable skill she has honed in constructing functional structures, to develop a series of works which, in this era of blandly reassuring branding and Mondo Art, have what could be described as a level of stylistic anarchy/crossover that could and should be welcomed.”

The concept behind this body of work is concerned with the emotional and psychological effect of communication difficulties and the manner in which individuals and groups react when confronted with a person with whom they are having difficulty communicating in a socially expectable way.  Whether it be synaptic, as in the disorder of Dyslexia, or emigrational, such as being confronted with a different language to that which you have as your first.

Brown’s work operates successfully on a number of levels, it connects to wider contemporary art practices and can be linked to issues like dyslexia and literacy.
